Importance Of A Good Trainer

Why is it so important to work with a good trainer?

Simple. If you want to receive a great deal of return for your time, plus financial, emotional, and physical investments, then you need to think of these details:

First: If you are interested in the best performance and care of your animal, and you aren’t an experienced horse person, then it becomes your trainer’s responsibility to guide you. But it remains your responsibility to find the right trainer. That trainer needs to respect your personal desires plus blend them with reality, so as to achieve the best outcome.

Ask yourself your goals: Competitive show horse? Bomb-proof trail companion? Take your ideas with you as you research trainers. Their reputation is as important as their personality and desire to assist you. They should enjoy working with both you and your mount, and be able to create a plan for you.

Check out the trainer’s facilities in advance: Know how/when your horse will be turned out, the feed ration and schedule, cleanliness of the stalls and facility. Notice if the trainer has a pleasant staff who enjoys their work, because they are likely to share in the sheer joy of horses --- making for a happier barn.

Finally: Get a contract in writing, so everyone knows what their role is and what the expectations are. Barn and training fees can add up very quickly. Make sure to then be watchful, otherwise money disagreements can ruin the best of original intentions!
