Being Present
In preparation to train (especially if your dog has a behavioral
problem that upsets you), or preparing to compete, take a moment
to connect with your dog on a deeper level by simply being
present with him.
Being present with your dog is a bit like meditating. First,
you become very aware of yourself:. With eyes closed, sit upright
in a chair, feel your spine against the back of the chair, and
your feet on the ground. Breathe. Let errant thoughts pass by,
and stay with your breathing. Open your eyes, keeping them soft
and unfocused, and look at your dog. Stay with self-awareness
as you sit quietly with him. It doesn't matter what he is doing.
Keep him in your awareness, and let everything else go.
Let competition worries, training concerns or thoughts pass
by, as you share a moment and focus only on the connection with
your dog. It is much easier to train your dog when you feel
fully present with him in the moment. If your mind is in several
places at once and your energy is scattered, you will not have
the same quality connection with him.
The great competitors and trainers are very good at being absolutely
present with their dogs. Dogs know and appreciate when you connect
with them, and they will respond by being more attentive and
more open to working with you.
